{"id":62,"date":"2015-08-30T06:56:03","date_gmt":"2015-08-30T06:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/attractiveape.com\/?p=62"},"modified":"2018-08-12T19:45:05","modified_gmt":"2018-08-12T19:45:05","slug":"elements-an-online-collectible-card-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.attractiveape.com\/index.php\/2015\/08\/30\/elements-an-online-collectible-card-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Elements &#8211; an online collectible card game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Youngsters don&#8217;t believe me when I say this, but there was a time when &#8220;collectible card game&#8221; wasn&#8217;t just jargon for &#8220;excuse to charge you real money for virtual cards.&#8221; I still think fondly of Etherlords 2, but that game is eleven years old now and it&#8217;s still the most recent video game from a major publisher to even try to do a CCG right (for my definition of right).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/attractiveape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/elements.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/attractiveape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/elements-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"elements\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.attractiveape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/elements-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.attractiveape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/elements-150x88.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.attractiveape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/elements.jpg 1015w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There have been a few attempts from indies to do CCGs well. Not many, but a few. <a href=\"http:\/\/elementsthegame.com\/\">Elements<\/a> is one of those and there&#8217;s a lot to like here &#8211; the game plays uniquely enough, I can&#8217;t think of any card games with a similar rule set, and there are a large number of cards which combo in ways which aren&#8217;t always immediately obvious.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to do good\/bad bullet points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good: still active community, now four years after the game launched<\/li>\n<li>Bad: inactive developer. Game development seems to have stopped entirely.<\/li>\n<li>Good: large variety of cards with powers which interact in many interesting ways<\/li>\n<li>Bad: getting all the cards you want to make interesting decks gets pretty grindy<\/li>\n<li>Good: even the grinding is fun, at first &#8211; the low power cards still manage to be interesting<\/li>\n<li>Bad: not forever<\/li>\n<li>Good: there are some quests to give you some objectives and get you started<\/li>\n<li>Bad: not many quests. And once they&#8217;re done continuing to play is entirely motivated by card collecting, nothing else.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite all the downsides, I&#8217;ve played the crap out of this game. I highly recommend that you play it for a while.
